EngenderHealth: Half the Sky Reader’s Companion

PROJECT: Web design

ROLE: Art director, designer, programmer

Half the Sky was written by journalist Nicholas Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn. It was first published in 2009. Through facts, data, and Kristof’s trademark journalistic storytelling, the book broke new ground in explaining how, around the world, “the greatest unexploited economic resource is the female half of the population.”

As an international nonprofit that works to improve women’s health and empowerment, EngenderHealth was pleased but not surprised to be mentioned in Half the Sky. The organization had occasionally been named in Kristof’s regular column for the New York Times.

Immediately after the book was published, EngenderHealth produced an online “Reader’s Companion” to the book. Each chapter was addressed with additional facts and stories from EngenderHealth’s experts. The Companion was featured on the original Half the Sky web site, and was the beginning of a larger cooperative effort with the authors that included roundtables and conference events.
